A false ceiling hides wiring, adds mood lighting and makes a room feel finished. The two most popular materials in India are POP (Plaster of Paris) and gypsum board. Here is how they compare.
Gypsum board ceiling
- Factory-made boards fixed on a metal frame, so the finish is smooth and consistent.
- Faster to install, with far less dust and mess.
- Best for straight lines, cove ceilings and profile light channels.
POP ceiling
- Made on site by hand, so it is very flexible for curves and detailed designs.
- Takes longer and creates more mess; finish quality depends on the craftsman.
Lighting ideas
- Cove lights: soft, indirect glow around the edges.
- Profile lights: sleek linear lines for a modern look.
- Spotlights: to highlight art, TV walls or the dining table.
Our recommendation
For most flats we recommend gypsum for its clean finish and speed, with POP only for curved details. See our false ceiling designs.
